 On the 11th of August Donetsk Regional Branch of the Democratic Alliance conducted a political performance “Ekostrofa.dn.ua” at the walls of Donetsk Regional State Administration.
The participants of the action advocated the issue of counter-measures aimed at eliminating the phenomenon of irresponsibility so characteristic for Ukrainian mayors when addressing the problems of environmental pollution. The Democratic Alliance found the reason of such irresponsibility in the politicians’ “polluted conscience”. Remarkably, the most polluted examples were provided by two mayors – those of Donetsk and Makiivka – who were later embodied in the character of the “Mayor”.
Citizens of Donetsk constantly addressed the mayor with an official request to solve at least those ecological problems, which threatened their lives directly. However, the mayor was apparently more interested in bribes, which could be easily obtained from a factory Board, and guaranteed the latter relatively secure legal protection providing enough possibilities to increase the quantities of emission. Additionally, the mayor claimed complete responsibility for accumulated domestic rubbish to rest on the company, which is assigned to remove the rubbish allegedly according to the terms of the contract made with the city.
The authors were criticizing and ridiculing the principles of Mayor’s work. Moreover, the performance brought up the problem of numerous difficulties and obstacles people have to face, in case they are not in power to influence directly, in order to bring their concerns to the authorities’ attention.
At the end of the performance the participants “cleared” Mayor’s conscience, gave him a mirror to keep the conscience clean and advised all local politicians to use their conscience more when making decisions.
Head of the Donetsk Regional Branch of the DA, Evgen Semekhin: “We put our demand perfectly clear: all decision-makers at each and every level must watch environmental conditions and moreover eliminate those cases when someone’s personal interests dominate those of the public. Only then can we expect the Donetsk area to avoid an ecological disaster.
....In case our demands are disregarded there is no doubt that the mayor’s work will be over again ridiculed in the spotlight of our performances”.
About 20 members of the DA DRD attended the event.
The action was held within the framework of the national youth protest campaign “Theatre of Political Drama”, which is planned to organise 50 theatrical performances in the city squares of Ukraine during June-December, 2008.
A focal point of the campaign is the incapability of Ukrainian political management to provide harmonious and stable development of our state.
